Following the end of the Twenty20 International series between the two greats of the cricket game, attention will now turn to the 50-over format, followed by some red-ball cricket.
The opening game of the three-match ODI series will take place in Johannesburg on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. IST. The first match of the T20I series was called off owing to weather, hence both captains split the series 1-1.
This will be the first ODI match both teams have played since the World Cup ended. This series may serve as an experiment to test out new players or an entirely new style of play in one-day internationals, as both South Africa and India will be contending for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
Iyer has an average of 75.71 in his last 10 ODI matches.
The betting tip is...
Shreyas Iyer to score 49.5+ runs
In the absence of Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram will be leading the Proteas squad for this ODI series. And now that Quinton de Kock has called a day on his one-day career, Reeza Hendricks will be opening the innings for his team alongside Markram.
Tony de Zorzi, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller are going to comprise the middle order in this South African batting lineup. Aiden Markram is likely to start the series with one proper spinner and four fast bowlers, including Andile Phehlukwayo as the all-rounder.
South Africa will go with their strongest XI in this match.
Predicted Lineup: Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram (c), Tony de Zorzi, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Wiaan Mulder, Nandre Burger, Lizaad Williams, and Tabraiz Shamsi
As for the Indian team, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been rested from the ODI series, and KL Rahul will be taking over the captaincy duties. He is all set to play in the middle-order as the wicketkeeper. Sai Sudharsan and Rajat Patidar are likely to get their India caps in this match and will bat in the top order.
Sanju Samson is highly likely to bat at number 6, but Rinku Singh might just beat him for that position. The main question that arises is: can we see Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal play together for India once again?
KL Rahul has returned to the team and will be captaining the side.
Predicted Lineup: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (c, wk), Sanju Samson/Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Deepak Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Mukesh Kumar
Even though South Africa holds the home advantage, the Indian players have clearly stated by their performance in the T20I series that they are more than ready for the challenge. India has won three out of the last five fixtures between these two nations, the most recent of which was hammering the Proteas in the World Cup league match.
Both the bowling attacks are quite young, and hence, the batters don't know what will be coming at them. A few of the key battles would be to see how the South African middle order counters the Indian spinners and how the Indian batters adjust themselves to the uneven bounce at Joburg.
