New format for 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup

A new format will be used for the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. There will be four groups of five teams each in the 2024 tournament, instead of the first round followed by the Super 12.

There will be two teams from each of the four groups that will progress to the Super Eight phase, which will further be divided into two groups of four. A semi-final and a final will be played between the top two teams in each Super Eights group.

There were two groups of four in the first round of the last two T20 World Cups, which included teams who qualified for the tournament and teams who finished between ninth and 12th in the previous tournament. Eight teams qualified for the Super 12 stage after the top two teams from each group in the first round.

12 teams have already confirmed their participation in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

In addition to qualifying automatically, the USA and West Indies will host the tournament. Several other teams qualified for the 2022 tournament, including the defending champions England. India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands have also sealed their spot for the same.

Both Afghanistan and Bangladesh booked their berths because they ranked second and third, respectively, on the ICC's T20I rankings at the cut-off date of November 14, 2022. Regional qualifiers will be used to fill the final eight positions.

Regional Qualifiers to decide on remaining teams

Rather than using the Global Qualifier framework, the final spots will be determined through regional action in 2024. Two qualification spots will be allocated to Africa, Asia, and Europe, and one to the Americas and East-Asia Pacific.

Due to their eighth-place finish in the Super 12 group, South Africa qualified for 2024, but Zimbabwe failed to make the most of their strong start, finishing last and being relegated back to regional qualification.

Both Namibia and Kenya failed to advance past the First Round of the tournament, but are regarded as short-priced favourites to qualify from the 2023 Africa Qualifier to return in 2024.

With multiple teams competing and no clear favourites for the top two positions, the Asia region is likely the hardest to forecast for 2024. In addition to UAE, Nepal and Oman are all capable of upsetting the bigger squads, as are Singapore, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Qatar and Malaysia.
