IPL 2023 Auction: Sam Curran becomes the costliest player in IPL history

History has been created during the IPL 2023 Auction on Friday in Kochi as England’s Sam Curran became the costliest buy ever in the Indian Premier League.

The English all-rounder was bought by Punjab Kings for INR 18.50 crores. Previously, Rajasthan Royals' Chris Morris was the most expensive Cash Rich League buy. Morris was sold to Rajasthan Royals for INR β‚Ή16.25 crore during IPL 2021 auction.

Punjab Kings bid the highest for Sam Curran

The 24-year-old Curran was the Man of the Series in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia as he consistently performed to help his team become the champions of the world.

Curran has played for the likes of Kings XI Punjab now Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings in the past. The southpaw began his IPL career with Punjab in 2019 but was released just after a single season. He was hired by CSK for INR 5.5 crore after that.

Sam Curran broke the previous record of Rs 16.25 crore

As a result of his exploits at the T20 WC, several teams were involved in a bidding war. Likes of PBKS, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, and CSK were all ready to break the bank for the all-rounder.

As of now, Curran has taken 32 wickets in 32 IPL matches, including a four-for. On numerous occasions, CSK promoted him to number 3 and he has played some crucial knocks. With 32 matches under his belt, he has scored 995 runs in his IPL career.
