How England has Changed their Test Performance?

England's Test performance has changed significantly in recent years. After a period of dominance in the early 2000s, they have struggled to compete with the top teams in the world. In 2019, they were ranked as low as 7th in the world. There are several reasons for this decline. One is that England has not been able to produce a consistent batting line-up. 

Their top order has been particularly vulnerable, and they have often struggled to score enough runs to win matches. Another reason for England's decline is that their bowling attack has not been as effective as it once was. They have not had a world-class fast bowler since James Anderson, and their spin bowling has also been inconsistent. The cricket betting sites have international odds with them.

In recent years, England has made some changes in an attempt to improve their Test performance. They have appointed new coaches and captains, and they have also tried to develop a more aggressive approach to batting. Combination of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes

One of the biggest changes in England camp is the two aggressive Test players coming together and bringing on the missing aggression in the team. Brendon McCullum is known for his aggressive style of cricket during his active days as a player and he has continued the same pace in his coaching as well. His force was combined with England’s most talented skipper Ben Stokes. 

After the Ashes 2021-22 loss in Australia, England’s management decided to bring in the best possible coaching staff and transfer the captaincy from Joe Root to Ben Stokes. The biggest benefit of this step was that the chemistry between Stokes and McCullum was perfect and it was visible the moment these two took the responsibility of England’s Test format. Brendon McCullum, Paul Collingwood, and Marcus Trescothik came in as assistant coaches with Neil Killeen and Jeetan Patel as pace and spin coaches respectively.

Managing the WorkLoad

One of the biggest steps the England Cricket Board decided to do was to clearly define the responsibilities of the Test and limited-over format coaching team. On one side, Brendon McCullum is heading the red-ball format and on the other hand, Matthew Mott heads the white-ball format coaching. Another relief came in for the players as they were allowed to manage their workload and choose the format they would like to play. 

Jos Buttler was given the lead for the limited-over format and he now rarely plays in the Test format. Ben Stokes has already announced his retirement from the ODI format and he is currently leading the Test team. Stokes still plays T20 cricket but his responsibility to lead the team is clearly defined for Test format only. Similarly, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Chis Woakes, Jack Leach, and Ollie Robinson are just focusing on Test cricket.
