Since the beginning of the Indian Premier League in 2008, international cricket has significantly transformed. One of the biggest transformations that has come in international cricket is the way a captain approaches every game.

The fast-paced IPL has been a learning curve for a lot of captains in the past and has helped them to walk through a road of fire to achieve greatness in international cricket.

The leaders of today’s day and age have become quick with their decisions and can also play the role of a 3-dimensional player who can lead the team from the front.

Historically, IPL has seen many great skippers and in this article, we have selected a list of 5 captains with the highest win percentage in the league.

5) Anil Kumble – 57.69%

Anil Kumble, the legendary Indian leg-spinner,  had a commendable stint as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. While not the highest among all captains, his win percentage of 57.69% reflects his strong leadership and strategic thinking on the field.

Kumble captained RCB for two seasons, from 2009 to 2010. During this period, he led the team to two IPL finals, showcasing his ability to strategize and guide his players under pressure.  Even though RCB fell short of the championship title in both seasons, Kumble's contribution to the team's performance was significant.

4) Sachin Tendulkar – 58.82%

During his tenure leading the Mumbai Indians, Tendulkar showcased his leadership abilities, guiding the team with his cricketing acumen and strategic insight. With a win percentage of 58.82%, Tendulkar left a significant mark in the IPL captaincy realm, demonstrating his ability to inspire his team to succeed on the field.

While Tendulkar's captaincy tenure might not have been as long as some of his contemporaries, his impact was undeniable. His leadership was characterized by a blend of experience, tactical astuteness, and a deep understanding of the game. Under his guidance, the Mumbai Indians achieved several memorable victories, contributing to their reputation as one of the most successful franchises in the IPL.

3) MS Dhoni – 59.37%

He is known for his calm demeanour under pressure, his ability to identify and nurture talent, and his knack for making crucial decisions at the right moments.

These qualities have been instrumental in the success of the teams he has led, most notably the Chennai Super Kings. Under Dhoni's captaincy, CSK has become one of the most consistent and feared teams in the IPL, having won the championship title a record 5 times.

2) Steve Smith – 59.52%

Australian batsman Steve Smith has carved a niche for himself as a shrewd leader in the IPL.  His astute captaincy skills are reflected in his win percentage of 59.52%, a statistic that places him among the elite captains in IPL history. Smith's leadership journey in the IPL began in 2013 when he captained the Pune Warriors India for a single match.

He later went on to lead the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2017, guiding them to a remarkable run to the IPL final. However, the Aussie had an unexpected end in the league and has not played IPL in the past 2 years and IPL 2024 will be his 3rd year of absence.
