What is Over/Under Betting?

Over/Under betting, also known as Totals betting, is a type of football betting where you bet on the total number of goals (or other specific events) that will occur in a football match.

Unlike traditional betting where you predict the winner or loser of a game, Over/Under betting focuses on the total score of a single team or both teams combined. The goal is to predict whether the actual score will be over or under a predetermined number set by the bookmaker. Here's how it works:

The bookmakers such as Parimatch or 1xBet etc. set a specific number. This number represents the combined goals of both teams in the game. You can then place a bet on whether you believe the actual goals will be over or under this total.

If the actual score surpasses the total, you win your Over bet. If it falls short, you win your Under bet.

Note: When placing over/under bets, you will notice that the numbers are set to half goals. Although it may look strange, it is actually very simple. ‘Over 2.5 goals’ will be successful if 3 goals or more are scored. If the teams score 0, 1 or 2 goals, your bet is unsuccessful.

Example of Over/Under 2.5 Goals

Let's consider a Premier League football match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. The bookmaker sets the Over/Under line at 2.5 goals.

Here's how it can play out:

If you place an “Over” bet with a stake of INR 1,000, you win if the match ends with a total of three or more goals. If the final score is 2-1, 3-0, or any combination that totals three or more, you win the bet.

On the other hand, if you place an “Under” bet with the same INR 1,000, you win if the match ends with two or fewer goals. If the final score is 0-0, 1-0, 1-1, or 2-0, you win the bet.

In addition to the lines that are set by the bookmaker, you can often also place bets on alternative outcomes where you can set the lines yourself.

If a bookmaker sets the line at ‘over 2.5 goals’ with odds of 1.80, you can raise this to ‘over 3.5 goals’ with much higher odds. Make sure to use this functionality wisely, as it can bring you larger returns.

Example of Over/Under Corners

In addition to predicting the amount of goals in a match, you can also predict other events such as corners. We will consider the high-intensity game between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in this example. The bookmaker sets the Over/Under line for total corners at 10.5.

Here's how it can unfold:

If you place an “Over” bet with a stake of INR 2,000, you win if the match sees a total of 11 or more corners. If there are 12, 13, or any higher number of corners, your bet is successful.

On the other hand, if you place an “Under” bet with the same INR 2,000, you win if the game records 10 or fewer corners.

Additional Markets for Over/Under Betting

Apart from goals and corners, Over/Under betting can be applied to various other aspects of a football match which takes your betting journey up a notch. Here are some popular Over/Under markets:

  • Shots on Target: In this market, you predict whether the total number of shots on target by both teams will be over or under a specified line. For instance, an Over/Under line of 8.5 shots on target means you win an “Over” bet if there are 9 or more shots on target during the game.
  • Yellow Cards: This market focuses on the total number of yellow cards issued in a match. If the bookmaker sets the line at 4.5 yellow cards, an “Over” bet wins if there are 5 or more yellow cards in the game.
  • Goals by a Specific Team: You can also bet on the total number of goals scored by a particular team. For example, if you bet on “Over 1.5 goals” for Manchester United, you win if the Red Devils score 2 or more goals.
  • First-Half Goals: In this market, you predict the total number of goals scored in the first half of the match. If the bookmaker sets the line at 0.5, an “Over” bet wins if there is at least one goal in the first half.
