SWOT Analysis of Team India for the Asia Cup

The Asia Cup 2023 was already making headlines because of its schedule and India’s declaration to not travel to Pakistan to play matches. However, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have come together to host the tournament, and Team India will be playing all their matches in Sri Lanka.

BCCI and the selection committee have finalized the 17-member squad of India for the upcoming Asia Cup tournament. There have been some surprise inclusions and some players who will make their return to the ODI team. The selectors have kept the upcoming ODI World Cup in mind and have named the best possible 17 players for the Asia Cup.

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will be making their comeback after staying away from action for more than 3-4 months because of their respective injuries. Tilak Varma is the new face in the team but there are very less chances that he will be getting to play. The top bookmakers in India have Asia Cup odds with them.

The Asia Cup 2023 squad announcement has come out as bad news for Yuzvendra Chahal as he was named in the squad. Skipper Rohit Sharma has assured that it is not the end for the talented spinner but things look fishy for his presence for the ODI World Cup as well.

Strength

Team India has always shown its strength in the batting lineup but because of injuries and the selection committee playing musical chairs with the lineup, the batting lineup has shown inconsistency. This time, India’s strength lies in their bowling unit with the return of Jasprit Bumrah, the pressure will be comparatively less on Mohammed Shami and Mohammad Siraj.

The trio can be deadly throughout the tournament and can do major damage to the batting lineup of any opposition. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav will play crucial roles in the spin department and they have displayed good form in recent times.

Weakness

Team India’s major disadvantage is in the middle order where they are already struggling at the number 4 spot. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are making a comeback after their respective injuries but there is still uncertainty regarding their form. Iyer was already out of form before the injury and it will be a huge risk for him to make a comeback in the Asia Cup setup.

Tilak Varma is new to handling the pressure in the middle order and might not turn out to be as effective as expected. Suryakumar Yadav has failed to impress at number 4 and the team can’t be dependent on him to score big runs against strong teams. The only player who can do wonders in the middle order is Hardik Pandya but he will have the role of finisher and will be coming at number 6.

Opportunity

Considering the fact that team India has some concerns in their middle order, but at the same time, its opening order looks perfect with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in positive form.

The trio can do major damage to any bowling unit in the world. In the previous edition of the Asia Cup, Virat Kohli played a crucial role and made his comeback against Pakistan and hence the selectors will be hoping that Kohli will be motivated to repeat the same.

Threat

For the first time in India’s cricket history, injuries have become a major threat. KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Prasidh Krishna are coming after recovering from their respective injuries but they are still vulnerable and a threat of injuries is still looming on their heads.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid should use them accordingly so that they remain fit for the World Cup.
